We are now off the ship Taku and in Juneau, AK. It was a great voyage and the scenery spectacular. Now it’s time to try to get some internet service today and see the sights around Juneau.
First we found a campsite at the Mendenhaull Glacier Campground. I shouls say here that we are right on the lake overlooking the water and the glacier in the backround. This site does not have elect or water but a better view than the full hookup sites. Firewood here is free but pretty wet. I tried last night for a fire but it failed and today I may buy some dry wood to go with it.
We went into town to get familiarized with the place. Wow there were about 6-7 cruise ships in town. The place was packed with tourists.
We went to the Alaska State Museum and the exhibits were very good. Had a docents tour of the place and then tried to find a place to eat which was difficult. Not many restaurants because the tourists all eat on the ship.
Mendenhall Glacier was good and the visitor center outstanding. They had exhibits of glacial formation and we got to view some mountain goats on the mountainside. So far , bears, whales, seals, sea lions, eagles, moose and flamingos (plastic). From our campsite you can sometimes see iceburgs in the water.
Well it is no official I have the Golden Age Passport for the Federal National Parks. I got one yesterday and the cost was $10.00 (would have saved me 50% on the campsite if we had gotten that first, but the entry to the exhibits at the glacier were free because of it.
Today we will try for the Juneau City Museum and the tram up I think Wrangle Mountain
behind the city. I’m going to see about an internet café or the airport for internet service.
Oh, and the air mattress got a leak last night so that’s a fixit job on the list.
