We left the Fort Bragg area this morning and headed north to Crescent City, CA. The northern California coastline is more beautiful and rugged with it’s craggy rock outcropping and islands than I remembered. Along the way we saw seal with new pups and drove Hwy 1 to Leggett. What a winding road.
North of Leggett we got to 101 north and the hwy improved drastically. SO did the price of gas at $4.59 per gallon.
When we got to Eureka, CA we went to the Samoa Cookhouse Restaurant for lunch. A great place and the last of the cookhouses that originally served the men of the sawmills. It is served family style all you can eat, one menu for the meal and you sit at long tables just as the lumber jacks did 60-80 years ago.
Tried to get a tour of the Pacific Lumber Mill but because of all the problems they are having financially now all tours are closed.
Somewhere in the Redwood National Forest we took a sky tram ride up thru the redwoods.
Just wonderful although you are high up.
We went thru Crescent City without stopping although it is a great little town. We are now on Hwy 199 at the Jedediah Smith State Park where Bev and I stayed with Vera many years ago. If you remember Vera this is where we capsized the inflatable boat.
Well tomorrow is Grant’s Pass and we will see Polly and Caroline. It has been a long time since we have seen one another (Polly was my former laboratory manager, and boss).
No posting on the internet tonight because there is no service.
