The Mackinac Bridge

Mackinac Bridge
Today was Labor Day and I spent the morning walking the Mackinac Bridge. Every Lab or day for ½ of the day they close off one lane of the bridge and people are allowed to walk across the bridge. You may only walk across in one direction from south to north and then they will shuttle you back to the southern shore.
Along the way were army national guards stationed every 20 feet or so to make sure that people stayed in just the one lane and to see about any who had medical difficulties. There were thousands of people who made the walk across the bridge and many were families with toddlers in strollers as well as many people in wheelchairs. It was heartening to see such a range of ages.
Some walked slower some faster and I must say that for an old white haired guy the walk felt good and few if any passed me.
The bridge spans between St. Ignace on the south to Mackinaw City on the north spanning the Straits of Mackinac which separate Lake Michigan from Lake Huron. So now I have viewed Lake Michigan, Lake Superior (where the Soo Locks are) and Lake Huron both from here and the Soo Locks.
The bridge is really a marvel of a suspension bridge spanning 3400 feet of and the steel center of the bridge is 4800 feet in length and the whole bridge is 17, 280 feet long. So I walked about 3 miles. The downhill part was better than the uphill and everyone was in great spirits. After finishing most of them were browsing the tourist shops and ice cream parlors on the Mackinac side of the bridge. When I got back though I did take a nice dip into Lake Michigan when I arrived back at the campsite.
At least now having seen the span I will not feel any trepidation at all in crossing it with the RV tomorrow. Yes it is time again to move on.
