Bushel and a Peck
Remember I told you about visiting the Rapp farms and how as a youngster I picked fruit there. Well as most of you So Cal people know you buy your fruit by the pound. Did you ever sing the nursery rhyme about the bushel and the peck and a hug around the neck.
When I ask people in So Cal what a bushel is they look at me with this strange stare as if I’m a little off. No on has even a clue as to what a peck is other than chickens do it. Well both of these are measures of fruit to be bought.
There were or are four pecks to a bushel and the baskets used to be made of woven wood.
Because people do not buy fruit in such large quantities anymore they do not make bushel baskets anymore but they do still have ½ bushel baskets and I have a picture of one for you. I also photographed a peck basket for you and an apple orchard although now all of the trees are dwarf trees.
New varieties of trees are coming out and I tried a golden crisp apple (wow that is an apple to die for) crisp and juicy I could have eaten a dozen of them. I saved one for Bev.
1 A 1/2 bushel basket
2 A peck basket
