Soldotna, AK

Soldotna, AK

Today was a short drive of only 113 miles but with stops it took all day or most of it. First we stayed up late last night to watch the fireworks in Whittier, AK although we did not go down to the wharf but watched from the RV window in bed.
This morning therefore proved to be a late one and then we missed the train tunnel schedule by a few minutes so we had to wait an hour for the next time to go thru.
You proceed thru a 2.5 mile train tunnel (the only road out of Whittier and you go out of town on the hour for 15 minutes up to 11:00 pm (closed at night) then traffic the other way comes thru and then the trains get to use the tunnel. Quite amazing really but it is sheer panic driving thru there the first time.
After exiting the tunnel we stopped at the Shugash National Park information center. This park is 5.1 million acres and 1/3rd of it is covered with ice. From the center we could see 5 I think glaciers. Quite amazing really.
We stopped many time to let traffic go by and to pull out at the view points. Great scenery and the rivers running with their glacial silt.
We are now in Soldotna, AK at the city campground on the river (Kenai I think). People are fishing all over the place for red salmon and trout. Tomorrow I may look into a fishing license.
Decided not to go this trip to Seward, AK but will spend out time slowly going down to Homer, AK on this side of the peninsula.
That’s all for now and I hope that I find some internet service tomorrow.
