Homer, AK

Homer, AK
Today we are in Homer, AK, this is probably the most westerly part of AK that is connected to the mainland of the continent by roads. It is hard to believe that beyond this are the Aleutian Islands which stretch another 2300 miles to the west. Most of these islands are a marine sanctuary to millions of migrating birds and sea animals. This to is the only place on the continental US where Japan invaded the US during WWII (actually two of the Aleutina Islands) and where we fought the Japanese.

Today we toured the Marine Information Center here in Homer and learned much of the birds that inhabit the Aleutian Islands and the conservation projects to protect them.
We are now on the Spit as it is called which is a long stretch of beach going into the ocean and you can just pull your RV up onto the beach and camp here. It’s not free but the view for $15.00 per night is fantastic. You look across the ocean at snow covered mountains and glaciers again on islands that make up the chain. In back of us are hill covered with pine trees and ash and birch. Across the spit is more ocean of the sound.

I even ran into a couple from Switzerland here in a Pingauer 6x6 modified into an RV.
I didn’t get to go salmon fishing today due to the rain so that was $10.00 for the salmon stamp wasted but tomorrow it will be Halibut fishing on a charter boat. I hope to have a small bit of luck and maybe we can have dinner tomorrow night courtesy of my fishing prowess. Either that or pork and beans. Bev decided against fishing as she got really cold and seasick the last time she went.

This will be as far west as we go and from here we will head to Anchorage. The barbeque seems to have a faulty valve and maybe I can get a replacement part for it there.
