Belly Creek to Glacier Natl Park
We spent a leisurely day driving in the morning from Belly Creek up a long two lane road (Hwy 6 ) and crossed back into the US at the Big Chief Mtn crossing. Customs was easy and they only wanted two oranges that we had onboard (we ate them there). On the way to Glacier, we spotted a bear on the road but again he was too quick to photograph. Glacier National Park which is the only international park we have as it is both in Canada and the US (originally designated Peace Park). It is now known as Waterton-Glacier Park. We also spotted lots of cattle on the road as we are in open range country.
Settled into St. Mary’s Campground here in the park and then headed off to the visitor’s center and the Road to the Sun. You can not take a vehicle longer than 21 ft on this road and it was quite a feat to build it. Lots of hairpin turns and the elevation climb is steep, but we have the jeep (what can I say).
Along the way as well as seeing the Jackson and Blackfoot Glaciers we spotted wild mountain sheep and a marmot who seemed to be just sunning himself on a rock.
Another interesting feature of the park are these old looking buses with open tops to take tourists for scenic trips around the park.
Later that night in our campground an unexpected visitor came calling. A good size buck deer. He seemed not to care too much about us and stayed eating the foliage at the edge of our campsite for about 45 minutes. Great looking feeling just being here in the wilderness and Bev just loved here deer. Scruffie was not impressed.
The last few days have been all sunshine and getting real warm for us. We have been used to cool (65 degrees ) that now that it is in the 80’s we feel as if we are having heatstroke. It is nice though to have the shade of the trees around the campsite.
We may not have internet for a few days so this will probably be posted at the end of the week, as we head down towards Missoula Montana. I think that we will be going thru a large Indian reservation because that route seems to have more lakes and rivers.
Well time for our nature walk and boat excursion.
