Paa Mul and Cozumel
Well today was another of those just great memorable days in the life of a traveler. First off we headed to pick up the laundry which we dropped off the day before. Then onto having the RV serviced. The place I stopped at today usually only did tires but they had large service bays and the manager said that they could do it if they could find the oil filter. Well, no problemo, I have the filter and the oil. I also carry a diagram of all of the grease fittings so that really helped them out.
They did find a broken bracket under the RV that holds the sway bar down on the drivers side. However, in Mexico they are very good at implementing repairs and although they could not get a new one they were able to weld and repair the old one. We also had the oil changed on the scooter and all of this for about $20.00.
After that was finished I left the RV at the tire place as they said that they would close at 8:00 pm and it was alright they would look after it. A short taxi ride and we were at the ferry terminal for Cozumel.
Cozumel is an island resort just off the coast from Cancun and is and all tourist area. There are more foreigners there than Mexicans with large mega hotel complexes and cruise ships stop there all the time. It was a short 45 minute boat ride on the ferry and we could not have taken the scooter as it was just passengers only (maybe bicycles could go on?).
After getting off the ship we had a snorkeling trip on a ponga with two guides. They provided two stops at reefs (paradise Reef and one other) and had all of the equipment if you did not have your own. We did so again no problemo.
The fish life was incredible with blue colors that I have never seen before when snorkeling. There were also the yellow and black sunfish, a silver fish with and iridescent green and blue stripe along its side and a black grouper I think.
The coral also was in colors of blue and orange as well as the familiar yellow. This again I had not experienced while diving before.
After the boat trip we took a scooter and went part way around the island. Most people go all the way around but it was getting late by now and I did not wish to drive it in the dark all the way around.
We stopped and had drinks (margarita time) and dinner at a restaurant over the ocean, Albertos. What a great choice, we had fish served Mayan style (Tikin-Xic) (they steam it in foil with lots of vegetables and anchiote spice, which is sort of spicy paprika. Served with potatoes, rice, tomatoes, cucumber and limes. After appetizers of guacamole and nachos what a great end to a wonderful day.
We caught the ferry back and then a short taxi ride to our RV and we were on our way back to the campsite. It was nice to see that when we got to the tire place that they were closed but had still posted a night watchman who was looking after our RV. We left him a small propina (tip) and thanked him for watching it for us.
Well tomorrow is breakfast at the Royal Caribe Resort and listen to a condo or timeshare pitch I am sure. This was for the snorkeling trip and the scooter rental today. Then it is onto Tulum to see our last Mayan ruin in Mexico and then onto Chetumal. This is where we will cross the border into Belize.
If I ever get wifi service again you will get these posts!
